In cooperation with the Michigan Department of Education and the Michigan Adult Learning and Technology Center, North Central Michigan College has completed a study of developmental writing practices in Michigan community colleges. The aim of this endeavor was to identify what were the best practices being used in this area and to compile data that would possibly help every institution more effectively serve their students. It is hoped that out of this research will come staff development guides for community based agencies, K-12 and other adult and literacy education "feeder" entities. |

In March of 1998, the Gogebic County Community School Program (GCCSP here-after), was informally commissioned to research the providers of adult education services concerning the instruction of adult learning disabled (LD). The apparent increase in alternative high school programs further added to the concern of a vast array of learning differences among students that must be addressed daily by the practitioners (teachers, aides, tutors, mentors, etc.) in the State of Michigan. Central Michigan University, through the State Literacy Resource Center, and as of October 1, 1998, now known as the Michigan Adult and Learning Technology (M.A.L.T.) Center, formalized a contract with the GCCSP on May 1, 1998, to conduct a professional development initiative to conduct a statewide survey of best practice, to identify that best practice and support it in statewide training. The project is to be coordinated with the National Institute for Literacy (NIFL) standards and the incorporation of their LD Tool Kit for educators. |
